For David and Dawn, retirement was meant to be a peaceful new chapter. After selling their five-star hotel, they settled into a new home in Huddersfield, looking forward to a quieter life. But their new property brought a challenge: it had virtually no security. An old, unreliable alarm system simply wouldn’t suffice, so the journey to secure their home began. Little did they know, this journey wouldn’t only protect their own home—it would go on to help make their entire neighbourhood safer.
An unexpected morning discovery
It all started with a special offer on Ring devices. David decided to purchase four, positioning them around the property.

One morning, David did his usual check of the Ring app. He scanned the activity from the night before and something immediately caught his eye. The footage, recorded at around 4am, showed three men on his property. They had come from the neighbour’s garden, having just broken into their garage. The video was extraordinarily clear. It even captured one of the men throwing the neighbour’s broken padlock over the hedge.
“The next thing the camera picked up was two of them... walking back down the side of the property, and one of them pointed up to the Ring camera—full faces for both of them,” David explains. “They just distinctly looked at the camera and obviously disappeared.”
David’s first reaction was a mix of relief and gratitude. “Thank goodness we’ve got the cameras,” he thought, followed by disbelief at the burglars’ blunder. “What idiots, looking full-face at them!”
From evidence to action
David downloaded the video footage and sent it directly to the local police who arrived promptly and took a keen interest in the clips he had captured. The high-quality footage from the Ring camera proved absolutely crucial.
“The police officer said 100%, without that video, they’d never have been able to see their full faces,” David shares. The clarity of the video allowed the authorities to identify the individuals, who were known to them from previous incidents. A few weeks later, all three men were caught and convicted.
The incident was a powerful demonstration of how effective his new security set-up could be. “It was just great pleasure that what we’d spent on the cameras paid off,” says David.
Sparking a community movement
The experience didn’t end with the burglars’ arrest. It inspired David to do even more. He worked with a local police officer to establish a neighbourhood watch group for his area in West Yorkshire.
The group, running via WhatsApp and Facebook, grew rapidly. As David spread the word about his experience, more neighbours joined in, eager to strengthen their own home security. “Lots of members started buying Ring products.” he notes.
The impact has been impressive. The collective effort, sparked by a single video clip, has led to a dramatic drop in local crime. “We’ve actually reduced crime in our particular area to virtually zero,” says David proudly. “If it hadn’t been for this camera of yours picking up those thieves, I’d never have set up a neighbourhood watch group and the crime in the area probably would never have reduced.”

A network of security
Today, David and Dawn’s home is truly a haven of peace of mind. Their initial four cameras have expanded into a network of twelve, covering every angle of their property. From a Video Doorbell at the front to Security Cameras keeping an eye on the drive, patio, and gardens, they’ve got every base covered. “We’ve got them in the main lounge covering the doors to the conservatory... We’ve got one in the kitchen facing... the double back doors where these guys tried to get in,” he lists.
David’s advice to other homeowners is simple and heartfelt, born from his own experience. “Buy good, reliable security products,” he insists. “We’ve been recommending Ring for the last three years to members of the group.”
His story, and the story of his neighbourhood, stands as a testament to how one person’s initiative, powered by the right tools, can spark a ripple effect of safety and community strength. For David and Dawn, their Ring devices do far more than simply record what’s happening outside; they offer a sense of security that’s helped them—and their neighbours—truly enjoy their homes.
