Both Video Doorbell 2 and Video Doorbell 3 send notifications to your phone, tablet, and PC when anyone presses your doorbell or triggers the built-in motion sensors. When you answer the notification, you can see, hear, and speak to visitors from anywhere.
The main differences are that Video Doorbell 3 has Dual-Band 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi connectivity (vs 2.4GHz only on Video Doorbell 2), for enhanced connectivity and Customisable Motion Zones that let you create and adjust your own Motion Detection areas. (reducing unnecessary Motion Notifications and conserving the battery life of your Video Doorbell 3).
Video Doorbell 3 also has improved screw strength, a redesigned, easy-to-remove faceplate, and automatic chime connection, which makes installing your video doorbell easier than ever.
The main difference is Video Doorbell 3 Plus includes our Pre-Roll technology, which allows you to see an additional 4 seconds of video before the motion event was even triggered – a first-to-market feature for battery-powered doorbells and unique exclusively to Ring. Pre-Roll video is in black and white and in low resolution to conserve your battery life and only works during daylight hours.
Video Doorbell 3 is powered by a rechargeable, quick-release battery pack or can be hardwired to existing doorbell wiring for continuous charging. To recharge Video Doorbell 3, simply press the button on the battery pack to release it from the camera, then plug it into a micro-USB cord until fully charged. Slide the battery back into place once it’s charged, and your Ring video Doorbell 3 is ready to go.
Video Doorbell 3 is compatible with Video Doorbell 2’s orange USB charging cable.
Mounting brackets and wedge/corner kits are not compatible but new versions will be provided in the Video Doorbell 3 box.
Solar Chargers are not designed to be used with the new Video Doorbell 3 and a new version is available here.
A separate Video Doorbell 1 converter kit accessory will be available to make the Video Doorbell 3 compatible with your Video Doorbell 1 mounting holes, so new drilling is not required. This product will be available soon.
Ideal for when you can't get to the door, or just don't feel like answering, Quick Replies let you set a pre-recorded audio message to play when your doorbell is pressed. Choose from six preset responses, toggle Quick Replies on and off in the Ring app and if you have a Ring Protect subscription you can even ask your visitor to leave a message, which you can playback later. Think of it as an answering machine for your front door.
At this time, the Quick Replies feature is available in the UK and Ireland.

No. You can still use Video Doorbell 3 to watch over your home and answer the door from anywhere, even without a subscription to Ring Protect. Without Ring Protect, you’ll still receive instant notifications when anyone comes to your door, and you can answer the notification to see, hear and speak to visitors in real time, right from your mobile device.
